Women of Wing Take On Grassy Key 2025

Updated: Jan 17

The Women of Wing (W.O.W.) came together for a third year in a row at Grassy Flats on Grassy Key in hopes of scoring some wind to better their skill set in the new sport of winging. The group of ladies came from across the US and Canada to share their own personal experiences in the sport and to learn from each other.

Day 1: A Windy Welcome

Most of the ladies arrived at Grassy Flats on Friday, January 10th and were immediately greeted by favorable winds. Without hesitation, they hit the water for a few hours. Thanks to sponsorship from Eleveight Kiteboarding, attendees had access to high-quality gear to try out and test out. It was a sight to behold as the women took to the emerald green waters just off the resort, their wings catching the wind under the sunny Florida skies.

The evening wrapped up with a delicious dinner, refreshing cocktails, and live music on The Palm Deck—the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.

Day 2: Adapting to Calm Waters

Saturday began with the hope for more wind, but Mother Nature had other plans. Despite the calm conditions, the Grassy Flats and W.O.W. teams had backup activities ready to keep the excitement going. A fleet of Lift and Waydoo efoils, courtesy of Florida Keys Waterman’s Company, was on hand to provide a unique experience. Efoiling mimics the sensation of hydrofoiling without the wing, allowing participants to focus on mastering one element of the sport.

In the afternoon, a brief cold front rolled through, bringing just enough wind to get some of the more adventurous participants back out on the water. As temperatures dropped, the group embraced the cooler weather by relaxing in the hot tub—a well-earned respite after an active day.

The night ended with a decadent dinner at The Rhum House. The menu featured seared scallops, roasted pork belly, and seared snapper, followed by indulgent desserts like apple pie cheesecake and chocolate rum tart. It was a feast befitting the incredible effort and camaraderie of the day.

Day 3: Yoga, Foiling, and Farewells

Sunday morning began with a rejuvenating yoga session led by Dagmar Salgado, complete with a mini sound bath to leave everyone feeling refreshed and centered.

The group then split into two: half took to the efoils again, while the other half participated in a SUP Foiling Clinic at Keys Cable. Professional paddleboarder Packet Casey traveled from Fort Lauderdale to lead the session. Using the cable park at The Lagoon on Grassy Key, Packet helped the women practice the sensation of foiling without a wing or motor. SUP foiling is a natural progression for those interested in downwinding or riding waves without a wing, and Packet’s guidance gave the group the confidence to tackle what initially seemed impossible.

After an action-packed weekend, the retreat concluded with a hearty meal at Bongos Botanical Beer Garden, where the women shared laughs, stories, and plans for the future. Though it was hard to say goodbye, the group departed with memories to cherish and skills to build on.

Looking Ahead

W.O.W. is already planning another retreat at Grassy Flats for January 2025. Until then, Florida Keys Waterman’s Company offers lessons in wingfoiling, efoiling, and kitesurfing on any windy day at Grassy Flats. With the Florida Keys’ wind season in full swing, now is the perfect time to try something new and exhilarating.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, Grassy Flats Resort and Beach Club is the place to connect with others, push your limits, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Florida Keys. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this incredible community.
